Day 7 - Tour Valley of the Kings, Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon

Valley of the Kings

We got up early this morning to get to The Valley of the Kings before the heat became unbearable. The artwork was amazing! Apparently the Pharonic artists used semiprecious stones to color the walls and ceilings of the tombs.

Hierogplyhs show scenes from the book of the dead, a preparation of answers to questions from the Egyptian gods would ask the dead to answer. Various answers would ensurea and help in the afterlife. The black dog is Anubus, the god of the underworld. The pit in 13 is where a scarcophocus was located. 16. Site of King Tut's burial chamber. It is located underground instead of the side of the mountains.

Queen Hatshepsut's temple

She was Egypt's only female pharoah...self proclaimed. She assumed control of Egypt by usurping power from Tutmoses the 3rd, her step-brother after her father died. Hatshepsut's rein lasted for more that 20 years until a grown Tutmoses regained power and had her denounced to say the least. Many of the carvings depict expeditions to southern parts of Africa and the bountiful gifts that were returned to Egypt.

Colossi of Memnon of Amenophis III is all that remain of his temple. It is said that it would ring in the early hours of the morning. Probably from atmospheric conditions, until a well meaning caretaker made some repairs in later years. Due the the increasing heat of the day this was a stop and shoot a photo visit.
